Ugandan Ambassador Dr. Betty Bigombe Meets Thai Security Chiefs in Mae Sot on Rescue Mission for Ugandans Stranded in Myanmar
On 26th March 2025, Uganda’s Ambassador to Malaysia and accredited to Thailand, H.E. Dr. Betty Oyella Bigombe, held a high-level security meeting with Major General Yutthaphoon Nuanmak, Deputy Director of Border Affairs in Mae Sot District, Tak Province. The meeting was part of an urgent diplomatic and humanitarian mission to coordinate efforts for the rescue and safe repatriation of Ugandan nationals stranded in Myanmar.
Also in attendance were senior representatives from the Royal Thai Police, Thai Immigration Bureau, and other relevant border security agencies operating in Mae Sot a critical location due to its proximity to the Thailand-Myanmar border, where a number of Ugandans are reportedly held in distressing conditions.
“This mission underscores our determination to ensure the safety and dignity of Ugandans abroad. We are grateful to the Thai authorities for their unwavering support in facilitating the safe rescue and transit of our people who have found themselves in extremely vulnerable situations,” said Ambassador Bigombe.
The rescue operation follows increasing reports of Ugandans being lured by traffickers under the guise of employment opportunities, only to be held against their will in conflict-prone and lawless zones across the border in Myanmar.
Major General Yutthaphoon reiterated the Royal Thai Army's commitment to collaborating with Uganda in addressing cross-border human trafficking and pledged continued intelligence-sharing, coordination, and logistical support to ensure a successful rescue.
This latest engagement builds on earlier partnerships between the Uganda Embassy and Thai security agencies, the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), and the International Justice Mission (IJM), which have already resulted in the repatriation of 24 Ugandans.
The Uganda Embassy in Kuala Lumpur remains steadfast in its duty to safeguard its nationals and will continue to work with Thai and regional authorities until all affected Ugandans are safely returned home.
