H.E. Dr. Betty Bigombe Meets Ambassador of Myanmar to Discuss Repatriation of Stranded Ugandans

This morning 22nd April 2025, H.E. Dr. Betty Oyella Bigombe, High Commissioner of the Republic of Uganda to Malaysia, held a crucial meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar in Kuala Lumpur to discuss the urgent matter of repatriating over 50 Ugandan nationals currently stranded in Myanmar.

During the meeting, H.E. Dr. Bigombe expressed her deepest sympathies to the Government and people of Myanmar following the recent earthquake that led to loss of lives and destruction. She praised the heroic and compassionate efforts of the Myanmar authorities in rescuing Ugandan nationals from scam centers and acknowledged the ongoing support extended to victims of trafficking and exploitation.

H.E. Dr. Bigombe commended the Government of Myanmar for its bold actions and urged for even greater efforts towards shutting down all scam centers and ensuring the safe release of all foreign nationals, including Ugandans. She emphasized the importance of thorough screening to identify and facilitate the swift repatriation of those affected.

Currently, only 16 Ugandans have been cleared for repatriation by Myanmar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Bigombe appealed for expedited screening and clearance processes to ensure that the remaining Ugandans are safely returned home. She reiterated Uganda’s commitment to working closely with Myanmar to address this pressing humanitarian issue.

The Ambassador of Myanmar reaffirmed that his Government, under the leadership of the President, remains committed to dismantling scam operations and enhancing bilateral cooperation on issues of human trafficking. He assured H.E. Dr. Bigombe that efforts are underway to intensify rescue operations and streamline repatriation procedures.

As a gesture of friendship and solidarity, the two Ambassadors exchanged gifts during the meeting.

H.E. Dr. Bigombe concluded by calling on the international community to recognize and support Myanmar’s efforts in combating transnational trafficking networks and protecting human dignity.

The Uganda High Commission continues to follow up closely on this matter and remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Ugandan nationals abroad.
